There is a corner of this basement that I like
and I hide there
with books and coffee
and prayer.
That I might escape
the gears and grease
and punching of timecards
that will begin in
35 minutes.
The service starts at 8:15
this morning and this
cog needs soon to
find his way upstairs
for insertion into the machine.
I will waddle up
to my supervisor’s office
(in which is hung the
plaques – certifying me a
professional) and we’ll
get this show on the road.
I’ll make my rounds
with handshakes and smiles
as flowered timecards are
distributed by the friendly
couple with nametags
at the door.
The door is shut
and the preliminary announcements
are made. This should be done
in about an hour.
