19. The pace of discipleship is the pace of wonder. About the speed of a walk in the woods stopping to look at the ferns or a butterfly. There is no certain cadence or rhythm for the pace is not measurable by metronome or toe tap. Did you consider that flower? Did you notice that pause in speech and averted glance? What color was that bird’s wing? If you can answer these questions then you are probably close to the right pace.
20. To behold the world my neighbor my child is actually no easy task. To look with clarity and focus. Clear-sightedness and attention. To see. To really see. Does not just happen. In fact, now that I think on it, I don’t have the resources to behold. The resources to see are not in me. I strain my eyes and squint my sight. But the fog lifts of its own accord. Or, of another’s. Sight is a gift.
